Botox is a cosmetic treatment that when injected into the skin relaxes facial muscles in order to eliminate wrinkles. It is among the most popular cosmetic treatments today. This is because it is also great for preventing new lines from forming. Botox relaxes the facial muscles to reduce excess movement and blocks muscle contractions beneath the skin, which is what allows it to prevent new lines from forming. Many people choose to get Botox treatment because it is a non-surgical and non-invasive way to reduce unwanted wrinkles. The effects of Botox can last 3-4 months, and can simply be upkept with regular treatments.
Because Botox is able to prevent muscle movement, it can also provide a wide variety of medical benefits. Botox has been used to treat medical conditions since the 1960s, and many people and found relief through Botox that they could not find through other treatment options. Some of these conditions can include migraines, excessive sweating, and movement disorders. It is important to note that when Botox is used as a medical treatment, the results are temporary.
Below are the top five conditions that the FDA has approved Botox to be a treatment for. For more information and to schedule your Botox treatment, reach out to Elume Medical Spa.
1. Chronic Migraines
Botox was approved as a treatment for chronic migraines in 2010. However, some doctors speculate that it is the placebo effect that is relieving the migraines rather than the drug itself. For many people, whether it is the placebo effect or not, they have found relief with Botox treatment and continue to get the injections. Botox began to be used as a treatment for chronic migraines when in 1992 a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon noted that his patients had reported fewer headaches. The injections are placed around the head and neck and allow the individual to find relief from migraines for about three months.
2. Excessive Underarm Sweating
Similarly to how Botox treatment was discovered to help migraines, doctors started to notice that patients who were receiving Botox injections for facial spasms were sweating less. From there, the scientists at Allergan (the pharmaceutical company who makes Botox) as well as outside of the company began to study the effects of Botox on sweating. A condition known as severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis refers to excessive localized sweating. For many, they experience this in their underarms. Botox injections into the area can help reduce the amount of sweat that the body produces. Botox has not only been used to treat underarms but also overly sweaty hands and feet.
3. Severe Neck Spasms
Before Botox was even approved for cosmetic use to reduce fine lines, it was approved to be used as a treatment for a disorder known as cervical dystonia. This is a condition that is characterized by abnormal head position and severe neck pain. The muscle contractions that result from cervical dystonia are thought to be caused by nerve signals that are sent from the brain to the affected muscles, telling the muscles to contract or spasm. Botox can help as a treatment for this condition because where it is injected it can block signals that tell the muscles to contract. As a result, the muscle contractions the patient experiences may be reduced.
4. Overactive Bladder
Botox has been found to be a very impactful treatment for an overactive bladder or urinary incontinence. This condition is caused by the bladder contracting too often or without warning, which leads to the constant urge to urinate and/or bladder leakage. Injecting Botox can relax these muscles and help reduce the need to urinate as often or experience as many bladder leaks. This treatment has been very effective for some people, and they continue to get the injections.
5. Crossed Eyes
Botox treatment has been found to be effective for a condition known as strabismus or crossed-eyes. There are muscles in your eyes that all you to move them side to side. When these muscles in one side grow weaker than the other, the side with the stronger muscles will pull the eye in the opposite way. This can leave you looking in opposite directions. Botox can help treat this by being injected into the strong muscle to relax it, giving the weaker muscle a chance to heal. Other people suffer from blepharospasms, eyelid spasms, and it can sometimes be so severe that the person cannot open their eyes. Injecting Botox into the eyelids can help relax the muscles and help to reduce the eyelid spasms.
