If you have never had a Botox treatment before, you’re likely wondering (or worrying) about what the experience will feel like and what changes you should prepare for. At Elume MedSpa, our goal is to inform and empower you with the knowledge and confidence to go into your treatment feeling prepared and secure in your decision. If you are considering Botox, read this helpful Botox guide so that you can know what to expect throughout and after your Botox treatment at a medical spa.
What is Botox Exactly?
Botulinum toxin, otherwise known as Botox, is a type of neurotoxic protein that is produced by C. botulinum bacteria. Botulinum toxin comes in several variations, labeled A-H. Each of these types is used for different purposes and has a different level of “toxicity.” Botulinum toxin affects the functionality of acetycholine, a neurotransmitter, in a variety of ways depending on the type. Each botulinum toxin variation has their own sequence and structure, which determines the severity and length of the effects. Botulinum Toxin A, also referred to as BTX-A, is FDA approved for cosmetic procedures. While it is still considered a toxin, it is safe for use by trained professionals in clinical settings, such as a medical spa. Many people use Botox to temporarily diminish wrinkles and crow’s feet, which gives their face a more youthful appearance.
Three Seconds After the Treatment
Immediately following your Botox injections, you may feel slight residual stinging from the injection. Generally, Botox is administered with small needles, so discomfort at the injection site should be minimal. You may notice a small bump at the injection site, but that will fade quickly and your face should look the same as it did before the procedure within thirty minutes.
Three Minutes After the Treatment
It’s important to keep in mind when receiving Botox injections that they do not work instantly. Botulinum toxin affects the nerves over a period of days if not weeks, so don’t be discouraged if you are not seeing results immediately after your treatment. After three minutes, your face will look nearly identical to how it looked when you walked into the spa, with the exception of some redness if you have sensitive skin.
Three Days After the Treatment
In most cases, Botox begins to work fully within the first week after treatment, so by day three you should be able to see a slightly noticeable difference in the appearance of the areas that were treated. If this is your first treatment, you may experience a “heavy” sensation in the treatment areas or feelings of tightness. Botox works by temporarily paralyzing the injection areas, so you may notice a difference in your range of expressions and slight changes in how your face responds when you lift your eyebrows.
Three Weeks After the Treatment
By this time, your treatment will be fully effective. You should notice a visible difference in the appearance of wrinkles and crow’s feet in the areas that you chose to treat. You may still be experiencing a slightly limited range of facial movement at this point, especially if you are new to Botox procedures. If at any point you are unsure if what you are feeling is normal, contact the medical spa where you received the treatment. The professionals there are highly educated about the potential side effects of Botox and will be happy to reassure you if you have any concerns regarding your symptoms.
Three Months After the Treatment
All good things unfortunately come to an end eventually, and Botox is no exception. Botox treatments are temporary, usually lasting between three to five months depending on how the treatment affects each individual recipient. When you reach the three-month mark, you may notice that the effects of your injections are slightly fading away. By the time you are six months past the date of your original injections, your face should look the same as it did before you received the treatment and you will have regained your full range of facial movement. Three months is a great time to call your medical spa and schedule your next treatment if you felt your first was a good experience. Keeping a consistent schedule for your Botox treatments can ensure that you maintain your newfound youthful glow for as long as you choose.
