Botox typically lasts 3 to 4 months, and in some cases a patient will experience 6 months of Botox benefits. The effects generally start to take full effect 7 to 14 days following the procedure.

Botox works by relaxing facial muscles to reduce excess muscle movements in the face, and in doing so, prevents new unwanted lines from forming. With Botox, your skin can return to the smooth, younger looking appearance that you wish to achieve for a flawless appearance. Botox can produce noticeable results, and those results are temporary rather than permanent. With subsequent treatments, the facial contractions that cause lines and wrinkles are reduced, which can make those lines less noticeable over time.

How Long Does Botox Last?

The effects of Botox generally take full effect 7 to 14 days following the procedure and last anywhere from 3 to 4 months, and in some cases a patient will experience 6 months of Botox benefits. As treatment is continued over time, wrinkles and fine lines can appear less severe because of reduced muscle activity.

The first botox treatment may not provide the results expected, as it may be difficult to tell how well the muscle will respond to Botox Cosmetic and precisely how many units may be required. Often a follow-up appointment is strongly recommended after 2 weeks to determine whether additional injections may be necessary to meet patient’s particular beauty goals.

Botox For Hyperhidrosis

Botox is primarily used to treat cosmetic conditions, however it also can correct a condition called hyperhidrosis. This condition is characterized by excessive sweating in the underarms. Botox injections into the affected areas of underarms, hands, and feet can greatly reduce the excessive sweat symptoms of hyperhidrosis

Factors That Affect Botox Duration

a man receiving Botox treatment for mouth and jaw issuesThe reason the amount of time Botox lasts is given such a large range is because there are many factors that contribute to how long it lasts. Variables such as age, health, muscle strength and activity as well as amount injected all play a role in the longevity of the benefits botox can provide.

Metabolism Of the Patient

The body’s metabolism also plays a role in how long the results will last. People who have a higher metabolism rate tend to eliminate the Botox more quickly. Unfortunately, age can also play a role in how quickly Botox wears off. Some patients may have to come in sooner for their next treatment.

Botox Injection Sites

Where the Botox is injected also affects the duration of the results. The bigger the muscle the Botox is injected into, the shorter amount of time the results last. Smaller muscles will have results that last longer. For example, Botox in the forehead can last up to 3 months, while Botox in crows’ feet can last up to 4 months.

How Can I Make The Results Last Longer?

There are several things that can be done to extend the results of Botox. Some patients ask whether supplements such as zinc, or topical retinoids such as Retin-A, affect how long results last. The evidence on this is limited, so it is best discussed with your provider at your consultation. Following treatment, vigorous exercise should be avoided because that could cause the body to start to metabolize the Botox before it has enough time to take effect.

Receive Multiple Botox Treatments

Even though the muscle activity and formation of new wrinkles is reduced, due to natural aging process the amount of Botox needed is likely to be increased over time. A patient should consider receiving Botox injections before their previous treatment effects have completely worn off. Doing so will keep the muscles in an atrophied state and prevent wrinkles from reappearing.
