A chemical peel works by resurfacing the outer layer of skin, so the days after treatment matter as much as the appointment itself. At Elume Med Spa in Fairfax, VA, the peel we use is the Perfect Derma Peel, and most people see the visible peeling phase begin around day three and finish inside a week. Your own aftercare instructions come from Shaheen Ghafari, a licensed Nurse Practitioner, and are adjusted to your skin and the depth of the peel.

What does your skin look like right after a chemical peel?

Straight after the appointment the skin usually looks a little tight and slightly flushed, similar to mild sun exposure. Most people are comfortable going straight back to work or errands. The solution stays on the skin for several hours after you leave, so the first evening is mostly about leaving it alone rather than treating it.

The important thing to know is that the peel is not immediate. The first day or two often look like nothing much is happening. That is expected, not a sign the treatment did not take.

Chemical peel recovery, day by day

This is the typical course. Skin varies, and a lighter or deeper peel shifts the timing in either direction.

When What most people see
Day 1 Mild tightness and a light flush. The solution is washed off at home per your instructions. Little to no visible peeling yet.
Day 2 Skin often feels tight and looks slightly darker or more textured. Still minimal flaking for most people.
Days 3 to 4 The peeling phase. Flaking usually starts around the mouth and nose and spreads outward. This is the most visible stage.
Days 5 to 6 Peeling tapers off. Newly exposed skin can look pink and feel sensitive.
Day 7 onward Peeling is generally complete and tone and texture start to even out. Continued improvement over the following weeks is common.

When can I wear makeup again?

Wait until your provider confirms your skin is ready rather than working from a fixed day count. Makeup applied over actively peeling skin tends to catch on the flaking and can tempt you into rubbing it off later, which is the thing most likely to disturb the process.

What should I avoid while the skin is peeling?

The single most useful rule is to let it come off on its own. Picking or pulling at flaking skin is what turns a routine peel into an uneven result. Beyond that, most people are asked to keep direct sun exposure, heavy sweating and unapproved active skincare out of the picture until the peeling phase is finished. Your provider gives you the specific list for your peel, and a number to call if anything looks unexpected.

How many chemical peels will I need?

Elume prices the Perfect Derma Peel per treatment at $250, so you can plan one at a time rather than committing to a package. How many you want depends on what you are treating and how your skin responds to the first one, which is the sort of thing worth settling at a consultation rather than in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does peeling last after a chemical peel?

For most people the visible peeling phase runs from about day three to day six, with skin generally settled by day seven. A lighter or deeper peel shifts that window in either direction.

When does the peeling actually start?

Usually around day three. The first day or two often look like very little is happening, which is expected rather than a sign the peel did not work.

Should I peel the flaking skin off?

No. Letting it shed on its own is the single most useful thing you can do. Picking or pulling at flaking skin is the most common cause of an uneven result.

How much does a chemical peel cost at Elume Med Spa?

The Perfect Derma Peel is $250 per treatment at our Fairfax, VA location, and the price is published rather than quoted at consultation.

Can I book a chemical peel online?

Yes. The Perfect Derma Peel is one of the treatments available through online booking on the Elume Med Spa schedule page, or you can call (703) 383-0431.
