Do the benefits of microneedling intrigue you, but you still have your doubts? I hear you. In fact, I understand completely. Having just recently experienced my first microneedling treatment, I can assure you, it’s not as scary as one might think. But I get it, like tattoos, the idea of having dozens of tiny needles pierce your skin can be intimidating (especially if you’re not very fond of them to begin with). To ease your fears, walk with me through some of the things you can expect after your first microneedling treatment.
Pre-treatment
This part is actually done before the treatment starts, but it’s important to know what to expect here as well. They’ll start by cleaning your skin, especially the targeted area. They’ll also apply a topical anesthetic to reduce any discomfort for the duration of the treatment, and then rub a cool serum over your face to help decrease the amount of after-treatment inflammation you experience.
Skin Inflammation
Want to know the first sensation you’ll likely experience after treatment? Inflammation. Yes, the skin on your face is going to be inflamed for a short period of time. That’s because you’ve just spent at least 30min having tiny needles pierce holes in the top layer of your skin(!). After the first few hours, though, a lot of the inflammation will fade, leaving your skin sort of pinkish. It’ll look and feel like you have a mild sunburn, and you should probably treat your skin as if you do.
Soreness
From inflamed sensitivity comes soreness (as if your face just did a workout…because it sort of did). Make sure you remember to not take any pain-killers. I know, I know, it sucks, but they’ll just interfere with the body’s natural healing process that’s needed for the microneedling treatment to work. Instead, try eating fresh pineapple to boost your body’s natural healing properties.
Peeling
Just like a sunburn, there will be peeling. You should expect this to occur a few days after your treatment. But while you might encourage peeling with sunburns, it’s best practice not to pick, scratch, or pull on any peeling skin on your face. Instead, do your best to keep it moisturized. You can also try laying a cool washcloth on your face to help ease any discomfort.
Dry, Flaky Skin
After peeling, you may start to experience dry and flaky skin about 2 days after treatment. This is about the time when you should start applying your skin moisturizer. Follow the specialist’s instructions and you’ll be fine. The more you keep your skin moisturized, the better and faster it’ll heal.
Minor Bruising
You may notice some slight bruising around your eyes from the microneedling. Don’t worry, it’s completely normal, and it’s minimal. It can easily be covered up with your choice of makeup and it will most likely fade within a day or so as your skin heals.
Benefits
After a few days of “dry flaky skin,” your skin should start to clear up and return to normal. Around this time, you may begin to notice the benefits you were after all along. Depending on your issue, you might see results shortly after your first treatment, but you may also need to go through two or three more treatments to even start seeing results.
I’ve been through about four treatments thus far, and I promise you, the benefits are so incredibly worth the wait! My acne has cleared up completely, and my skin tone is much more even than just a few months ago, and my face is all around joy to behold. I simply can’t recommend microneedling enough.
Where to Go for Treatment
If you’re interested in learning more, I recommend talking to someone at Elume Medspa. That’s where I go for my treatments, and they are amazing. The owner and creator, Shaheen Ghafari, is a licensed professional with nine years of experience in the skincare field. She started Elume Medspa in 2009 to offer patients the best possible skin care treatments around.
Along with microneedling, the spa also offers Botox, Dysport, sclerotherapy, hair removal, and much more.
My first time there for my microneedling treatment, I was so scared and nervous. But the specialists there were easy to talk to, they walked me through the entire process before we started, and throughout the treatment, they continued to remind me to remain still and calm.
Thanks to the topical anesthetic, I didn’t feel a thing the whole time. It almost felt like I was getting a face massage. In fact, it was so soothing I almost fell asleep.
